The Goddess of the Stove

The Goddess of the Stove
A beautiful old woman
Clad in red garments
Hair knotted
On the top of her head
Charged with brewing medicines
seeking prolongation of life
a most noble aim

Worship this beautiful old woman
The Goddess of the Stove
Clad in red garments
Her hair delicately knotted
On the top of her head
Converting cinnabar
In to golden drinking vessels
The most noble of deeds

Give audience to
The Goddess of the Stove
A beautiful old woman
Clad simply in red
Hair twisted, knotted
On the top of her head
Plays music on warm pipes
Ripening millet amid frozen earth

Make due sacrifice
To the Goddess of the Stove
the immortals of Pengai
Living in the midst of the ocean
Make offerings to
The five sacred mountains
the four great rivers and
Give breath to immortal words

Food
warmth
beauty
music
and a red dress
who could not worship at the feet
of the goddess of the stove
or fail to praise
the singer of her song?

I too love the notion of the Goddess of the Stove. Of course I was not thinking of Nigella Lawson as I wrote it. I had in mind an ancient Chinese alchemist working in her cluttered kitchen. As for a kitchen shrine Luna! That would top the piece off.

Then you would have loved my Grandmother's kitchen Heather.

She cooked, prepared our medicines, made the family ready for the day, grew and dried and prepared exotic herbs and spices.

Everyday she met with her friends and they held little community meetings about the various families, who needed help; there were children being born, people being married, children with childhood ailments to be taken care of...
And all of this was done not in her kitchen...not really but it would be in a place you'd recognize!

I most certainly would have loved your Grandmother's kitchen Anita Marie especially if it had a community feel about it. On the Sunday's of my Salon my place is infused with creative energy and I find I am invigorated for days afterwards.
